Citronella Candles Will Answer You Insect Prayers!

Enjoying the outdoors with your family is one of the best memories to experience.  Whether it’s barbecuing, camping, or playing sports; there really isn’t anything else that compares.  However, once the mosquito attack begins; the fun is usually cut short.  Some people cover themselves in a repellent protruding an awful smell that often keeps the family away; but never really the insects.  And some choose the wiser decision and purchase Citronella candles to scare away the bug population.  Besides, the best part about utilizing these candles is that the smell being emitted is rather pleasant and is even known to subdue barking dogs.  This, of course, doesn’t compare to the pungent scent from a spray that requires a shower in the end.

But, how exactly do these candles work?  First of all; these types of candles contain Citronella oil that can also be purchased separately.  People are known to place this oil in Citronella Torches along with the candles creating a safety barrier from insects.  The additional bonus to Citronella Torches is the unique decoration that surrounds the exterior of your home.  There are many creative designs available which allows you to personalize the area with placement.

However, despite the variety of ways to utilize the Citronella oil; the candles seem to be the most popular way.  This essential oil is derived from the stems and leaves from over 55 different grasses.  These species are known as Cymbopogon; a group of tall grasses found in the Philippines.  Due to its perfume scent; the citronella candles provide a sweet smell that is often pleasant and flowery.  This is a major progress in the insect repellent industry.

Another identifiable feature for a Citronella candle is its strong wick that can often withstand strong winds.  Because it’s an outdoor candle; this is vital in maintaining its effectiveness and thanks to modern technology, the flame can often burn for up to 10 hours.  With the contemporary designs and scents available, the purpose is to create a comfortable environment that can be enjoyed during any outdoor occasion.

There are some people that collect the remaining wax strips from previous candles and try to make their own.  It’s a pretty easy project with minimal resources and due to the increasing population of insects; you can never have too many.  Remember to save one of the Citronella candles so that the bowl can be recycled.  Take the variety of scented wax strips and throw them into a melting pot to allow the softening to begin.  You can purchase wicks and wick tabs at most craft stores, but make sure they are already primed.  Depending on the size of candle determines the size of the wick; so choose accordingly.  Place the wick tab on the end of the wick as that will be used to hold it into place while the Citronella wax cools.  Dabbing a bit of glue; push the tab onto the bottom of the empty candle container until it dries and is able to stand on its own.  At this point, the smell of the melting wax will be lingering around the area.  For added benefit, you can add additional Citronella oil to the mix for a specialized scent.  Pour the wax mixture into the candle holder using chop sticks to keep the wick centered.  Once it cools for 24 hours; you’ll have a Citronella candle just waiting to be used!  With all of the different uses and benefits that these candles can provide; you have to wonder why you haven’t utilized them yet!
